Top knots are all the rave right now and for good reasons, too! Top knots are the perfect go-to lazy day or errand-running hairstyles, but they can also be classy and a great hairstyle option for a night out! They’re also quick and easy to do and let’s be real, somedays convenience is the best and only option for our hair, right ladies?
Growing up what is now called the top knot was used to be just called a “ballerina bun” or “bun”. As I have shared before, I have been a dancer my entire life so naturally I rocked a top knot almost every day of the week for years and years. As a dancer, it was always important to me that my top knot would stay secure while I was dancing. In order to achieve this, I would always have to have my go-to styling tools and accessories. Goody has always been my #1 go-to brand for hair styling tools and hair accessories, as they never let me down with the quality of their items!
I can’t tell you how many times I was rocking a top knot during the day and then a friend would invite me out last minute. At first I would freak out, since I didn’t have the extra time to shower and get ready again, but I have found a great method for me to help me transform my daytime top knot into a nighttime sensation.
Today, I’m going to be sharing detailed tutorials of how I get the look of both my casual top knots and my sleek top knots with the help of my new, trusty Goody items!
DAYTIME TOP KNOT TUTORIAL:
Step #1 // Since my hair is on the thinner side, after I brush through my hair with the new Goody Clean Radiance Oval Cushion Brush, I choose to curl it. Curling my hair before creating any kind of top knot helps me not only gain volume, but it’s more sturdy to work with. If curling your hair isn’t your thing but you need some volume, try using a sea salt spray while our hair is damp or a dry shampoo.
Step #2 // Once my curls have set, I brush through them. This helps to fluffy out the curls and give me the volume I want to work with. The Goody Clean Radiance Oval Cushion Brush is comfortable when brushing and gives me radiant and healthier looking hair. The copper bristles help to massage the scalp and work through the hair to reduce buildup and restore your hair’s natural moisture balance (results based on consumer usage and perception study).
Step #3 // Gather all of your hair into a high ponytail and be sure to get any of the bumps that try to stick out (aren’t they annoying?) the back of your hair brush in nicely. To secure my ponytail, I use the Goody SlideProof Silicone Clear Ponytailers, sold in a pack of 30.
Step #4 // Before wrapping the hair around the ponytailer, I twist my hair tightly, as this helps to keep a sturdy top knot.
Step #5 // I then wrap my hair around the ponytailer and on the second time around, I continue to wrap around the hair that’s already in place. Then I secure with another Goody SlideProof Silicone Clear Ponytailer.
Step #6 // Since this is more of my “Daytime Top Knot”, I like to pull at the top knot to make it a little more loose and casual.
Step #7 // To make sure that my top knot will survive my crazy day, I use the Goody Simple Styles Hair Spin Pins. Ladies, these are a total game changer! Instead of just poking them in, they spin into your hair. This gives more security than bobby pins.
Step #8 // After fixing my top knot to the way I like it, I set it lightly with one of my favorite hairsprays.
This daytime top knot is perfect for any day, really! My favorite days to rock a top knot are coffee dates with friends, errand running, or simply when I’m lounging (I mean working) around the house. This top knot takes less than 3-5 minutes to create, depending on how you like yours, which is why it’s the perfect convenient hairstyle.
NIGHTTIME TOP KNOT TUTORIAL:
Step #1 // After taking out your day time top knot, repeat step 2 from the previous top knot. There’s no need to re-curl your hair, since you should still have volume from your day time top knot.
Step #2 // As I make my hair into a high ponytail, this time I only pull my hair through the loop of the ponytail twice. The third time I start to pull my hair through I only pull about 1.5-2 inches, which leaves my hair with a tiny nob sticking out.
Step #3 // Then I gently tease my hair that isn’t pulled through the ponytailer, so that it has some extra volume.
Step #4 // I take the teased part of my hair and start to fold it over the tiny nob of hair. I do this until the hair is completely wrapped around, and then once again I secure with Goody Simple Styles Hair Spin Pins.
Step #5 // Once I’m satisfied with the end product of my sleek, nighttime top knot, I set it lightly with one of my favorite hairsprays.
This nighttime top knot is perfect for a date night, girls night, or even a night on the town. Since it’s super sleek and chic, it can be the perfect up-do for a wedding or other special occasions. This top knot takes about 5 minutes, as you want it to be more put together and elegant.
