Just this past Saturday, May 27th was the first year anniversary of when we adopted our cat, Juniper. Last year, we decided to adopt a cat, because we needed some fun in our lives and because I’d have a friend with me while I work from home. Adopting Juniper is hands down one of the best decisions Michael and I ever made. We love her! She is our little sunshine! I don’t care how cheesy that may sound – it’s true. 🙂
Today, I want to share about why we’re happy we adopted Juniper, as well as tips that you need to know if you want to adopt a cat of your own.

When Michael and I first decided to adopt a cat, it was hugely important to us that we prepped appropriately. Back then, we were living in a small apartment, but even that apartment needed prepping. We spent time organizing our apartment and blocking out any super small spaces that a kitten might be able to squeeze into. We also had a blast picking out tons (I mean TONS) of toys, a bed, and other things every kitten needs. But what was most important to us is that we got the right food and treats for her.
I always head to PetSmart for all of my cat’s needs – food, treats, litter – you name it! Starting June 1st at PetSmart, you can grab a $10 gift card when you spend $40 on participating Purina® products in a single transaction. This offer is only good through the entire month of June, so make sure you take advantage of it! All you have to do is upload your receipt to claim your reward. Purina® ONE and Purina® Friskies® Party Mix Cheezy Craze are Juniper’s favorites, especially the treats! She eats any of Purina® Friskies® Party Mix treats, but there’s just something she can’t resist about the Cheezy Craze above the rest.
I always love heading to PetSmart to shop for Juniper, because of two main reasons.
1. They have a ton of options for everything and anything you need for your pet.
2. It means I get to spoil her with her favorite treats and usually a new toy, as well. She’s definitely an only pet, haha!
We have always chosen Purina for both food and treats, because Juniper loves it all! Purina has a wide variety of food, treats, and litter for your pet available at PetSmart, which helps take the mystery out of how to care for your pet and give them what they truly want.
WHY WE’RE GLAD WE ADOPTED A CAT:
The truth is, there are countless reasons why we’re glad that we adopted a cat. It was important to us that we adopted, because so many pets are left alone, unwanted, and even abused. A little background on Juniper: She was found on the side of the road in an abandoned truck with her brothers and sisters. How sad is that, right? I’m so thankful that the shelter we adopted her from found her and gave her the proper loving that she needed until it was time for her to meet us and come home with us.
Juniper is the little light of our lives and always brings us joy. She’s always there to greet us at the door (unless she’s taking advantage of sleeping on the bed by herself). She knows her name and will literally have a conversation with us. She sleeps soundly at our feet during the night and if she wakes up before us the next morning, she waits patiently, not meowing. Though, the second she hears our alarms go off, she’s all the meows begging for her breakfast, haha. Juniper is the most playful and affectionate cat I know, plus she has a super incredible way of showing her emotions on her face. She cracks us up!
As someone who works from home full-time, I don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s always there for cuddles, to cheer me up, and to let me chat with her when I need a friend. She has the most funny and adorable quirks and always knows how to make Michael and I smile.
Above is a picture of Juniper the first day we brought her home. At first she was shy, but when we broke out the fun feather toy and some treats, she was happy to get settled in. Can we take a second to notice how tiny she was?! Ah!! My heart!
TIPS FOR ADOPTING A CAT:
Pet-Proof Your Home // Before you bring your sweet little kitten/cat home, it’s important that you go through your home and pet-proof it. Make sure that any super small holes are plugged up appropriately and that any places that are harmful are way out of reach. Make sure that you prepare your home to be a peaceful environment, as it can be very stressful for the kitten/cat to transition.
Have These Items On Hand // Food & water dishes, food, treats, cat bed, toys, brush, litter box and litter, scratching post/strips, cardboard boxes, and cat carrier.
Place The Carrier On The Floor Of The Car // When we first got Juniper in the car as we were leaving the place we adopted her from, she was screaming. I was holding her in the carrier on my lap as we drove away and this did nothing but make her scream worse. After we decided to try putting the carrier on the car floor, she started to calm down almost immediately. By having the carrier on the floor, it made her feel more secure and not as motion-shaken.
Be Prepared To Love & Attend A Lot // If you’re adopting a kitten/cat or any pet for that matter, I’d hope that you’re ready to give them a ton of love, attention, and care. With that being said, the first couple weeks of transition can vary depending on the cat. Be ready to be there or attend to them any way you need to. Make sure that you don’t overwhelm them either.
Be Patient & Let Them Come To You // Patience is one of the most important things about adopting any pet. When you first bring them home, make sure you do so calmly. When you unzip their carrier, don’t force them to come out or to come directly to you. It’ll take them awhile to adjust, to explore, and to get comfortable. Go with their flow.
