Last month, Michael and I decided to take our kitten, Juniper, up to his parents’ house for the weekend. We live in Southeastern, Pennsylvania and his parents live in Rochester, New York which means it’s about a 5 1/2 hour drive straight there. The only other drives Juniper had been on before this was her drive home from the pet store we adopted her from and short trips to and from my friend’s apartment. She had always been good on those shorter drives, but we were nervous about how she was going to be on her first long drive.
After about 10 minutes of being in the car, Juniper was falling asleep! We seriously could’ve have been any more lucky! It was almost like she just accepted the fact that she had to be in the car and decided to be quiet about it. It honestly made us chuckle a little bit. We were so relieved, but we were also so proud!
To prepare for her first big drive, I put together a travel kit that was just for her. It contained all of the essentials that she’d need at any point during the drive. This travel kit wasn’t only a help for sweet Juniper, but it was a huge help for both Michael and I. By being well prepared, we got to relax when we were driving. Being relaxed is way better than being stressed when driving, so we are 100% glad that we planned beforehand.
WHAT I INCLUDED IN THE TRAVEL KIT:
Makeshift Litter Box // My first thought when realizing we had to take Juniper with us on our trip was, “What are we going to do about a litter box?” We then came up with the idea of using one of our larger tupperware containers as a makeshift litter box. It was big enough to fit on the floor in the car if she needed to go during the trip, and it was the perfect size for staying the weekend anywhere away from home. Surprisingly, Juniper didn’t have to go at all during the trip, but I’m thinking it was because it was the first long trip she had ever been on.
IAMS™ Prohealth Active Kitten Food // Food is absolutely essential for traveling. While the kitten should eat a few hours before traveling incase of any car sickness, it’s important to have food to put out whenever you get to your destination. Depending on how long the trip is, I choose an appropriate sized container for what Juniper will need while we’re away. IAMS™ is our go-to brand for Juniper and she absolutely loves their food(I think that’s obvious form the photo above)! We’ve been using it since we first adopted her back in May. Their customized mix of protein and carbs contribute to healthy energy levels for your kitten/cat. Having an IAMS™ diet for Juniper has shown a visible difference, as she’s always active when she should be and cuddly when we want her to be.
A healthy cat is a visibly happy cat.
When Juniper is healthy and happy, I’m able to relax and find comfort in that.
Water & Food Bowls // Packing two tiny feeding bowls was key incase she made it clear to us that she needed food or water. We love how compact these ones were. It’s always nice to have designated bowls for your cat. We also just packed a bottle of water for her if we needed to give her any water on the go.
Treats // Whenever traveling with a kitten, I always have treats with me. Treats are a great way to literally treat your kitten if they’re being a great sport, especially if it’s a super long car ride.
Toys // I packed up some of Juniper’s favorite toys not only for the trip, but for when we arrived at Michael’s parents. We put the small mouse in with her in her carrier and kept the other packed away. A toy can help provide some comfort to a kitten while traveling.
That completes my travel kit for Juniper! It was super easy to put together and very successful. I’ll definitely be doing the same for every trip. What is something you like to include when bringing your pet on a long car drive?
