Insecurities. We all have them. We can choose to let them consume us or we can choose to face them head on.
Today, I’m really opening myself up with you all as I share about one of my toughest insecurities. This isn’t something that I ever thought I’d write about here, but I know that by sharing about my insecurity, it can do 2 really great things: 1. Encourage someone to get vulnerable and face their insecurity head-on. 2. It will allow me to experience freedom.
So, what is my toughest insecurity, you ask? My toughest insecurity is my teeth. Growing up, the dentists always said I had a crowded mouth and that I would need braces. My family wanted badly to be able to afford braces for me and my two younger sisters, but it was just out of reach financially. By the time I was halfway through high school, my teeth really started to burden me. I would try not to laugh really hard when I was with friends, as I didn’t want my teeth to show. I started to avoid smiling with my teeth, because I didn’t want others to see how crowded my teeth were. While I was nervous about what others might think, that wasn’t really a struggle for me. The heaviest struggle for me was to face myself.
Over the past couple years, I have started to hone in on this insecurity and have started to make some changes to see myself in a healthy way again. While I’d love to get my teeth straightened sometime in the future, I am learning to embrace myself just as I am right now. Today, I want to share with you some ways that I have been able to face my insecurity to embrace the process of overcoming it.
5 WAYS TO OVERCOME YOUR INSECURITIES:
1. Learn To Accept Yourself // I’m starting off with the most important step in the journey of overcoming your insecurities – you have to learn to accept yourself. Accepting yourself and the things you see about yourself as flaws or imperfect is so key to not just overcome your insecurities, but to live out a life full of joy. By holding yourself back from accepting yourself as you are, you’re holding yourself back from truly loving yourself. It’s okay to feel your feelings of insecurity, but don’t allow yourself to stay there. Most of the time, your insecurity is something you have the power to change. Feel your feelings, accept yourself, love yourself, and then look for ways you could fix that insecurity.
2. Stop The Comparison Game // I’m not typically someone who deals with comparison, but some of the toughest times that I do is because I just wish I had straight teeth. “If I just had straight teeth like her, I’d feel so much more comfortable with myself”, and other similar thoughts run through my head. And you know what? They tear me apart. The comparison games that we play are not healthy! Whatever your insecurities may be, you need to know that you’re never going to overcome them if you don’t quit comparing yourself to others. You only have 86,400 seconds in a day – don’t lose even one of them to the comparison game.
3. Give Extra Care To Your Insecurity // Whatever your insecurities might be, you should be giving some extra care to them. Now, I don’t mean sitting there and wallowing in your insecurities. Instead, you should find ways to hone in on special self-care activities that will help ease the insecurity and take steps to overcoming it. Choose to speak a positive future over yourself, and speak against any negativity that your insecurity might bring you. The way you think about yourself and talk to yourself creates your reality, so choose to fight to think and speak positively.
5. Celebrate What’s To Come // The journey to overcoming your insecurities can be a long and tough one, but it will be so freeing in the end. When you get discouraged about where you’re at, look ahead at what’s to come. Celebrate that! Celebrate yourself to the end of the journey if you need to. Be grateful for the process and give thanks for being able to push on in spite of everything to overcome your insecurities. You can do it!
